Drive died after 8 months
Pros
Fast, spacious, excellent warranty coverage, helpful technical support
Cons
Faulty unit, slow to replace, runs noisily and hot, saps battery life
Recommended it?
No
I installed this drive in December of 2005, and it died today, July of 2006, not more than 8 months later. While the system was operating, the drive started clacking and grinding before the system locked up. Rebooting returned an 'Operating System Not Found,' and the Hitachi technician said it was faulty.
The tech was very helpful, but unfortunately, despite the drive having a 3 year warranty, it will still take me 15-20 days to receive a replacement, though likely an upgraded model.
I'm heavily weighing purchasing a different model entirely so that I can get up and running again quickly with a more reliable unit.
I bought the unit for its speed, which was certainly noticeable. I enjoyed the unit while it worked because of its performance and capaciousness. Having a total of 8 hours of battery life before this drive, installing it reduced that to 6, which was still excellent, although a bit disappointing to have to plug in during the day. The unit was also noisier than my previous slower drive, and it ran hotter as a result. A drive with more cache would definitely be nice.
